There's something encouraging about what Brett Berard is doing in Laval. The Canadiens' new forward scored twice in Friday's 6-2 win over Cleveland, bringing his totals to six goals and three assists in 13 games with the Rocket. That's a pretty good start with a new organization. In fact, those six goals already match what he scored in 41 AHL games with Hartford last season.

But here's the part I find interesting. Berard can keep scoring, keep working, and keep making himself useful in Laval, and there still might not be an easy path to Montreal. That's a difficult position for a young player to be in.

Doing the Work Doesn't Always Open the NHL Door.

Berard has given himself a fresh start after being acquired from the New York Rangers in June. A change of organization can sometimes be just what a player needs. New coaches, new teammates, and a different opportunity to show what he can do. So far, the early returns look promising. He's finding the net, adjusting to Laval, and giving the Rocket another forward who can contribute offensively.

Of course, there's a difference between producing in the AHL and convincing an NHL team that you're ready for a regular job. Berard has already had a taste of NHL hockey, but getting another opportunity and keeping it are two different challenges. And that's where things get interesting.

Can the Canadiens Find Room for Berard?

The Canadiens aren't simply waiting for somebody to score a few goals in Laval before handing out a roster spot. They have their own lineup decisions to make, and a player coming up from the farm has to fit into the jobs available. That doesn't mean Berard's efforts are going unnoticed. It means that development and opportunity don't always move at the same speed.

Fans sometimes look at a prospect's numbers and wonder why the organization doesn't give him a chance. It's a fair question, but there's more to it than the latest scoring line. Coaches have to consider roles, consistency, and whether a player can help the team in the minutes he's likely to receive. For Berard, the best answer is probably to keep making that decision harder.

Berard’s Next Goal Is Bigger Than Scoring.

I like stories like this because they remind us that not every player's progress comes with a big announcement or an immediate NHL promotion. Berard is doing something useful in Laval. He's building confidence, getting comfortable with a new team, and putting together the kind of start that gives him something to build on.

The Canadiens may not have an opening for him tomorrow. But hockey careers can turn quickly. An injury, a lineup change, or a stretch of strong play can create an opportunity that wasn't there a week earlier. For now, Berard can't control when that door opens. He can only keep giving Montreal a reason to open it.
