By the Letters: Quality of the "Q”—Four Goalie Legends from the QMJHL

In the hockey world, letter "Q" carries a weight that transcends geography. While it has been used as shorthand for the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), in NHL circles, the “Q” has also often been referred to as a “Goalie Factory”. For decades, the “Q” has served as a premier finishing school; the legacy of the “Q” is written in the rafters of NHL arenas, anchored by four titans who helped transform the art of goaltending.
Patrick Roy (Granby Bisons): Modern greatness begins with Patrick Roy. Following three seasons in the “Q”, Roy arrived in the NHL as a revolutionary force. He backstopped the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche to four Stanley Cups (two each), becoming the only player in history to win three Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP. Patrick Roy’s technical innovations helped set the template for the modern era.
Martin Brodeur (Saint-Hyacinthe Laser): Following three seasons in the “Q”, Martin Brodeur became a major part of the New Jersey Devils’ dynasty. Brodeur’s puck-handling was so disruptive it famously forced the NHL to implement the "trapezoid" rule. With three Stanley Cups and four Vezina Trophies, Martin Brodeur retired as the NHL’s all-time leader in wins (691) and shutouts (125).
Roberto Luongo (Val d'Or Foreurs / Acadie-Bathurst Titan): Roberto Luongo carried massive expectations from his time in Val d'Or and Acadie-Bathurst into an illustrious NHL career. Luongo became a cornerstone for the Florida Panthers and Vancouver Canucks. A two-time Olympic gold medalist, Roberto Luongo remains fourth on the NHL's all-time wins list (489)—a testament to sustained excellence over 1,044 games.
Marc-Andre Fleury (Cape Breton Screaming Eagles): In Cape Breton, the play of Marc-Andre Fleury led to becoming the #1 pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Throughout his time in Pittsburgh, Fleury helped lead the Penguins to three Stanley Cups. A Vezina Trophy winner—with the Vegas Golden Knights (2021)—Marc-Andre Fleury surpassed Patrick Roy (551 wins) for second place on the all-time wins list (575 wins). Fleury’s longevity and character helped make him one of the most respected figures in the game.
The “Q”—A Legacy Set in the Crease
The “Q” is more than a developmental league; it has been a vital part of hockey history. By providing the foundation for Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur, Roberto Luongo, and Marc-Andre Fleury—the only four goalies in NHL history to make 25,000+ saves—it is quite clear that the the “Q” helped redefine the art of goaltending.
