By the numbers, number “62” isn’t supposed to mean much in the NHL. It’s not a classic defenseman’s number, not one that jumps out on a roster sheet. But watch Brandon Montour for a few shifts and that changes quickly. Over time, he’s helped turn number “62” into something familiar.

No Shortcuts to the NHL

Montour didn’t arrive in the NHL with much fanfare. Drafted 55th overall in 2014, he had to earn every step. He developed through junior hockey and the American Hockey League before cracking Anaheim’s lineup in 2016. As with most early-career NHLers, Montour’s time learning the NHL game—in Anaheim and Buffalo—helped him learn how to manage risk and play through mistakes.

Florida Is Where It Took Shape

Things truly clicked once Montour landed in Florida. During the 2022–23 season, he put up 73 points and became one of the NHL’s most productive defensemen. When the playoffs rolled around, his game went up a notch. The moments didn’t overwhelm him—he leaned into them.

  • 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs: Montour’s five goals in seven games led all defensemen through the first round

  • 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs: Montour’s played 24 games; earning 3 goals, 8 assists for 11 points

During Florida’s run to the 2024 Stanley Cup, his presence showed up shift after shift. By the time the Panthers claimed the first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history, Montour had become one of the players Florida relied on when it mattered most.

Taking #62 to Seattle

In the summer of 2024, Montour brought his Stanley Cup championship experience to Seattle. The Kraken signed him to a seven-year, $50 million contract with an average annual value of $7.14 million. Clearly, they added a defenseman who understands what winning hockey looks like. Wearing number “62”, Montour helped give Seattle’s blue line a sense of direction.

  • 1st season with Seattle (2024-25 Stats Line): 81 GP; 18 goals; 23 assists; 41 points

62: What the Number Says Now

These days, number “62” tells a story of a Stanley Cup champion who has earned his way into the NHL narrative. Brandon Montour didn’t make number “62” famous overnight. He built its meaning one season at a time, until the number on his back became part of how fans recognize his game.
