Sometimes the most interesting moves of the offseason are not the ones that dominate the headlines. They are the ones that tell us how a team thinks. The Montreal Canadiens signing Brett Berard to a one-year, two-way contract is the kind of move that often reveals how an organization is trying to build.

The Canadiens are not simply collecting players. They are creating competition.

Berard is new to the Canadiens’ organization.

Berard arrived in Montreal last month when the Canadiens traded defenseman William Trudeau to the New York Rangers. Now, he gets an opportunity to prove he belongs in the NHL. And that chance is exactly what young players need.

Berard has already shown that he can produce at the American Hockey League level. Last season with the Hartford Wolf Pack, he recorded six goals and 22 points in 41 games. Over his AHL career, he has collected 93 points in 145 games while bringing a physical edge.

He also has some NHL experience. During the 2024-25 season, he appeared in 35 games with the Rangers and recorded six goals, 10 points, and 53 hits. Last season was a smaller sample size, with 13 NHL games and no points, but the experience still matters.

Now Berard gets a fresh start in Montreal.

The Canadiens have spent the last few years rebuilding their prospect pipeline and creating more internal competition. The days of simply handing young players NHL jobs because there are openings are changing. Players have to earn those opportunities. That is how good organizations develop strong depth.

Berard may start the season in Laval. The goal is not simply to get every prospect into the NHL as quickly as possible. The goal is to create an environment where players push each other, improve every day, and force management to make difficult decisions. For the Habs, those are good problems to have.

Will Berard make the Canadiens’ roster? Who knows at this point?

The Canadiens don't know yet whether Berard will become a long-term NHL player in Montreal. Nobody can predict that. But these types of signings are about giving the organization more options. And options are what NHL teams need.

The big moves get the attention, but sometimes the small additions tell us just as much about the plan. Berard's contract does not guarantee he will become a key player for the Canadiens. But it is a sign that Montreal is continuing to build an organization where players have to earn their place.
