Jacob Fowler has been quietly turning heads in Montreal lately. The 21-year-old was called up from Laval in early December, and he’s been more than just a body in net—he’s starting to make the Canadiens notice.

Fowler keeps it simple. “I’m just trying to live one day at a time,” he said after stopping 28 shots in a 4–1 win over Calgary. And you can see it on the ice: he’s calm, focused, and ready when the puck comes his way.

He got his first taste of NHL action after Montreal lost badly to Tampa Bay, and even though he gave up a couple of goals, the team still won. That seems to have done wonders for his confidence. Since then, he’s been solid—four wins, two losses, two OT defeats in eight games, a 2.37 goals-against average, and a .912 save percentage. Not bad for a guy who was in Laval just weeks ago.

Fowler Has Been Great in the Third Period

One thing that really jumps out is how he handles the third period. Fowler has faced 65 shots late in games and stopped 62 of them. That’s a .954 save percentage—basically, he’s keeping Montreal in games when it matters most.

With Samuel Montembeault still shaking off an AHL stint and Jakub Dobes hanging back, Fowler is now the goalie Montreal leans on. Even GM Kent Hughes has said he looks ready for the NHL. He’s calm, composed, and treating every chance just like it counts.

Fowler is quick to point out it’s not all on him. “We’ve played a lot of good hockey,” he said. “The team’s given me a chance to make saves and limit the big chances.” You can see it—he’s clearly thriving with his teammates backing him up.

The Bottom Line for Fowler and the Canadiens

What’s the bottom line? Don’t be surprised if Fowler sticks around. Rookie seasons are always a bit messy, but when someone shows up like this, it’s hard to ignore. Montreal might just have found a goalie who isn’t just filling a spot—he’s earning it, one save at a time.
