Dustin Wolf Is the Most Interesting Flame to Watch

Dustin Wolf could be the most interesting Calgary Flames player in Thursday night’s season opener. It wasn't a surprise that he was named the starting goalie; the announcement isn’t really hot news. But the bottom line for the Flames is that Wolf might be the guy who tells us where this Flames rebuild is actually going.

Calgary was 29th in the NHL last season. The Flames scored fewer goals than anybody in the league. That’s not exactly a recipe for making a goalie look good. And yet, Calgary's goaltending wasn't the problem.

Wolf and Devin Cooley actually gave the Flames something to build around. Cooley had a terrific season as the backup, while Wolf took on the huge workload. Wolf finished 2025-26 with a 23-29-3 record, a 3.01 goals-against average and an .899 save percentage in 57 games. Those aren't great numbers. But sometimes numbers need a little context.

Wolf has a bigger job than stopping pucks for the Flames.

Wolf is expected to be Calgary's No. 1 goalie again, with Cooley backing him up. And here's where I think this gets interesting. The Flames don't need Wolf to steal games every night. They need him to give all those young players a chance to grow. That’s a different job.

When a rebuilding team gives up an early goal, it can change the whole night. Young players start chasing the game. Mistakes get magnified. Suddenly the other team has a two-goal lead, and everybody is looking at the standings again. A goalie who can settle things down becomes more than a goalie. He becomes part of the daily rebuild.

Wolf could be the truth teller for the Flames’ season.

This might be the secondary story worth watching. Dustin Wolf had a very good first full NHL season. Then last year wasn't nearly as good. He was asked to play a lot behind a Calgary team with plenty of defensive problems, and his numbers slipped.

So which Wolf is Calgary getting? That may be one of the most important questions the Flames will answer this season. If Wolf bounces back, Calgary might discover that it already has one of the most important pieces of a rebuilding team. And if he struggles again, the conversation gets much more complicated.

None of this means that Wolf suddenly became the Flames’ biggest problem. Calgary will have to figure out how much of the problem is the goalie and how much is the hockey team playing in front of him.

That's why Thursday night is worth watching. The Flames may not be ready to win many hockey games this season. But if Dustin Wolf can keep giving them a chance, the kids might learn how to win some of them.
