Flames Arsenii Sergeev Got a Tough Intro to NHL life on Saturday

The Calgary Flames were in the second half of a back-to-back, had to travel, and faced one of the league’s most dangerous offences. That’s a tough assignment for any goalie, let alone a young netminder making just his second career start.
The Avalanche won 5-2, but that’s not the whole story for the Flames.
Colorado won 5-2, but the final score doesn’t tell the whole story. Arsenii Sergeev was thrown into a difficult spot after Calgary had played Seattle the night before. The Avalanche came out firing, built a big lead, and made the Flames chase the game. That’s not exactly the kind of setup where a goalie can settle in and make life look easy.
Still, this is a useful experience for Sergeev. The 23-year-old has taken a long road to get here. Calgary drafted him in the seventh round in 2021, and he worked his way through college hockey and the Flames’ minor-league system before making his NHL debut last April. He won that first game, stopping 27 of 28 shots against the Kings. Saturday was a much tougher follow-up, but one difficult night doesn’t erase the progress that got him here.

Sergeev’s role for the Flames is pretty clear.
For now, Sergeev’s job is pretty straightforward: give the Flames a capable option while Devin Cooley is out, and be ready when his number is called. Dustin Wolf remains Calgary’s main guy, and Sergeev is expected to back him up. That doesn’t mean the organization has given up on Sergeev. It means he’s still developing and getting a chance to learn what NHL games demand.
The challenge is that backup goalies don’t always get ideal circumstances. Sometimes they’re asked to start on short rest, after travel, against an elite offence. Sergeev got the hard version of the job on Saturday.
The encouraging part? Sergeev has already shown he can handle a big moment. The next step is to put together more starts, learn from the rough ones, and show the Flames he can be trusted when they need him. No need to overreact to one loss—especially one that came with this many obstacles stacked against him.
