The Toronto Marlies are heading to the AHL Eastern Conference Final, and they did it in the most chaotic, last-second way possible. Easton Cowan played the hero in the final moments against the Cleveland Monsters. The young Marlies forward scored with 12 seconds left to lift his team to a 3-2 win in the decisive Game 5 of the AHL Eastern Conference semifinals against the Monsters.

It was another comeback win for the Marlies in the series.

This wasn’t a smooth ride by any stretch. Cleveland came into the third period with a 2–1 lead and looked like they had things under control, especially after shutting down Toronto’s attack through a pair of penalties. The building had that feeling where one more goal might just end it. But the Marlies didn’t go away.

With 4:30 left, Logan Shaw stepped in and ripped a one-timer past Zach Sawchenko off a feed from Vinny Lettieri to tie it 2–2. That goal changed everything. Suddenly, the pressure flipped, and Cleveland went from protecting a lead to surviving a storm.

Then came the moment that swung the series. With 40 seconds left, Artur Akhtyamov came up huge with a save on Luca Del Bel Belluz to keep Toronto alive. That stop set the stage for the chaos that followed.

With just 18 seconds remaining, Cowan entered the zone and set up Jacob Quillan behind the net. Quillan quickly found Lettieri in front, but Lettieri couldn’t cleanly get his shot away. The puck bounced off his stick and slid right into the perfect spot where Cowan was already waiting. With Sawchenko committed, Cowan buried it with just seconds left on the clock to send the Marlies through.

Cowan had played solid hockey in the series, but hadn’t been the standout until that moment.

For Cowan, it’s the kind of goal that can shift how people view a young player. He hadn’t been loud in this playoff run, but he showed up at the exact moment Toronto needed him most. And of course, Lettieri just keeps rolling. He opened the scoring early and finished with another multi-point night, continuing what’s been a massive postseason for him. He now leads not just the Marlies, but the entire AHL playoffs in scoring with 13 points.

Now the Marlies move on to face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the Eastern Conference Final. And after a finish like that, they’ll be carrying a lot of belief — and a little chaos — with them.
