In the long history of the NHL, thousands of incredible players have hit the ice. But when it comes to one of the ultimate scoring records, there is a mountain so high that only one person has ever reached the top.

To score 100 points in a season makes you a superstar. To score 150 makes you a legend. But scoring 200 points? That is so difficult that in over 100 years of hockey, only one man has done it. Wayne Gretzky didn't just do it once—he did it four times!

The Only Member of the 200-Point Club

While NHL fans have seen greats like Mario Lemieux and Connor McDavid dominate the ice, no one has touched the “200-Point Club”. The closest anyone ever got was Mario Lemieux, who finished the 1988-89 season with 199 points. He was just one point away! Because of that, the club remains a “Club of One”, with “The Great One” holding the only membership card.

Here is a look at when Wayne Gretzky earned his membership card for the “200-Point Club”:

  • 1981-82 (212 Points): Before Gretzky, 200 points in one season was—perhaps—perceived to be impossible. In 1982, a young Gretzky proved it was possible, finishing with 212 points. This was also the famous season when he scored 92 goals, which is still the record for the most goals in a single season.

  • 1983-84 (205 Points): Gretzky’s second time hitting the 200-point mark was perhaps his most impressive. He racked up 205 points (87 goals) in just 74 games. If he hadn’t missed six games, his total would have been even higher.

  • 1984-85 (208 Points): By his third 200-point season, Gretzky was basically a human cheat code. He finished the year with 208 points (135 assists) and helped lead the Edmonton Oilers to another Stanley Cup victory.

  • 1985-86 (215 Points): In 1986, Gretzky hit the absolute peak of his career, setting the NHL record with 215 points. To put it in perspective, “The Great One” had 163 assists that season. If you took away every single goal he scored, his assists alone still would have won him the scoring title by a landslide.

200-Point Club Member: A Legend Like No Other

Decades later, Gretzky’s four seasons in the “200-Point Club” still stand alone. In a league filled with incredible talent, these years remain the ultimate proof of why Wayne Gretzky is, and always will be, “The Great One”.
