Oilers Draisaitl Watch: Close, But Not Quite Ready

The short version of the Edmonton Oilers’ news is a mix of good and not-so-good news. Leon Draisaitl is back on the ice, practicing with the team, moving like he knows where he’s going. And, that’s huge. But he’s not a done deal for Game 1 quite yet.
Draisaitl’s injury rehab has been very measured and careful.
This has been a careful, measured comeback since that hit in Nashville. He missed time, went to Germany for a second opinion, and hasn’t been rushing anything since. That actually feels smart. Leon’s not the type to fake it: he said he felt it right away, and it got worse the next day. That’s the kind of thing you don’t want to paper over and hope for the best.
What’s reassuring is his approach. He’s clear about needing to tick off a few on-ice boxes before he’s ready to return. He’s played through injuries before, but this isn’t a “gut it out” moment. This is a “don’t make it worse” moment. That cautiousness is the kind of common sense you want from a superstar whose health matters more than one game.
With Draisaitl out, opposing teams have an easier time against the Oilers.
From the team’s perspective, 97 points in 65 games changes how opponents game-plan for Edmonton. You feel his absence in power-play looks, line combos, and who you throw at them. If he’s ready for Game 1, that’s a huge boost; if he’s a few games late, the Oilers can adapt, but the picture changes.
Coach Kris Knoblauch has basically said the same thing: ideally, Leon’s there from the start of the playoffs, but they won’t force it. If he’s back in Game 3 or 4, that’s still meaningful. The real goal is to get him back close to 100 percent, not just slotting him in because the calendar says so.
So, where does this leave the Oilers heading into the playoffs?
So where does that leave the Oilers? Optimistic but patient. Skating with the team is a promising sign; it means he’s on the right track. Still, practice and playoff minutes are different animals. He says he’ll know more by the end of the week, and that’s the update to watch.
The bottom line is that Draisaitl’s progress is real, and the team’s urgency is controlled. We’ll likely see him sometime early in the series if things keep trending right, but nothing is for sure until he’s cleared to play.
