If you’ve been watching the Ottawa Senators this regular season, you’ve probably noticed something. Drake Batherson looks like he’s taken another step. After missing the first few games of the season with an upper-body injury, he’s hit the ground running and hasn’t slowed down since.

The 27-year-old forward was just named one of the NHL’s stars of the week, and it’s easy to see why. Over his last five games, he’s piled up 11 points — five goals and six assists — and hasn’t gone more than a night without making the scoresheet.

Here are three reasons Batherson’s season already feels like a breakout.

Reason 1. Batherson Returned to the Senators Ready

Batherson didn’t ease into the season — he jumped right in. After missing training camp time and the first three games, he returned Oct. 14 in Buffalo against the Sabres and immediately started producing. That tells you something about his preparation and mindset. He used the off-ice time well, and it shows. He’s stronger along the boards and seems more confident shooting the puck.

Reason 2. Batherson’s Chemistry with Stützle and Cozens Is Clicking

Playing alongside Tim Stützle and Dylan Cozens (Cuzzy, as Batherson calls him) has brought out his best. The three have been relentless on the forecheck. They’re hounding pucks, forcing turnovers, and turning them into high-quality chances. It’s not fancy hockey, just smart, connected play. And right now, it’s working beautifully.

Reason 3. Batherson’s Driving the Senators’ Power Play

Five of Batherson’s early-season points have come with the man advantage. He’s become a key part of Ottawa’s top unit, using patience and timing to create plays that weren’t there before. It’s a sign of his growing maturity and hockey sense.

Where Does Batherson Currently Sit on the Senators’ Scoring?

Through ten games, Batherson sits with 15 points and looks like the offensive heartbeat of Ottawa’s top six. He’s always had the tools, but now everything’s coming together — timing, confidence, and leadership.

If this keeps up, it’s not just a hot streak. It’s the next step in Batherson’s evolution into one of the league’s most underrated playmakers. Toward that end, so far so good.
