Sometimes a goaltender's season can change with one good opportunity. Samuel Ersson hadn't won a game entering Saturday's matchup against San Jose, but he finally did. More importantly, he gave the Ottawa Senators something they need while Linus Ullmark is out.

Ersson stopped 22 of 23 shots in Ottawa's 5–1 win over the Sharks. Michael Misa beat him in the first period, but Ersson allowed no other goals. He finished with a .957 save percentage and picked up his first victory of the season.

That's a welcome change for a goaltender who entered the game with a 0-3-1 record in seven appearances. Those numbers weren't going to inspire much confidence on their own, but one game can remind everyone that a goaltender's value isn't always captured by his early-season record.

Ersson Has a Chance to Make This Opportunity Count.

With Ullmark expected to miss at least another week because of a lower-body injury, Ersson should have more opportunities to play. That matters for Ottawa, because teams rarely get through a season on just one goaltender.

There's a temptation to look at a backup goaltender's job as simply being ready when called upon. But it's more complicated than that. A backup has to stay prepared without knowing exactly when the next start will come. He also has to step into a game situation without expecting a long adjustment period.

Ersson's performance against San Jose was a good start. He handled the work in front of him, recovered after allowing an early goal, and gave his teammates a chance to settle in.

Ottawa Needs More Than One Goaltender.

The interesting question now is whether Ersson can build on Saturday's performance. One strong outing doesn't establish a new level of consistency, and Ottawa shouldn't expect him to duplicate a .957 save percentage every night. But he doesn't have to become Ullmark. He needs to give the Senators dependable minutes while their regular goaltender is unavailable.

That's an important distinction. Teams need depth, and goaltending depth can be particularly difficult to find. If Ersson can provide a few steady performances, he could make Ullmark's absence easier to manage.

For Ottawa, Saturday was more than Ersson’s first win. It reminded everyone that a season often depends on players being ready for opportunities they didn't necessarily expect. Now he has a chance to show that this wasn't just one good night.
