I've been hoping to see Vinni Lettieri get an opportunity with the Toronto Maple Leafs for a while now. He's the kind of player who might not attract much attention, but if you watch what he brings to a team, you can see why coaches like having him around. Lettieri was called up from the Toronto Marlies on Sunday, and I hope he gets a chance to play. He's 31, hasn't appeared in an NHL regular-season game since 2024-25, and probably knows better than most that opportunities like this don't come along every day.

He's done his part to earn one, too. Lettieri has started the season with three goals and six assists in his first five regular-season games with the Marlies. That's a pretty good way to get noticed. He earned his opportunity, in part, by playing well with the Marlies last season, and he's kept working to prove himself. Now, he's back with the big club, at least for the time being.

The Maple Leafs Could Use What He Brings.

Lettieri isn't going to be confused with one of the Maple Leafs' star players. That's not the point. Every team needs players who can step into a lineup, bring some energy, compete hard and make life a little easier for the guys around them. That's where I think Lettieri can help.

He's a depth player, but that doesn't mean he's an afterthought. These players matter over the course of an NHL season. Injuries happen, schedules get demanding, and sometimes a team needs somebody who can come in and give it a good shift without making the game more complicated than it needs to be.

Lettieri brings energy, and he has shown he can produce in the AHL. If he gets into a game with the Maple Leafs, I suspect he'll be eager to make the most of it. Of course, a call-up doesn't guarantee playing time. The Maple Leafs have lineup decisions to make, and Lettieri may have to wait for his opportunity. Still, getting the call is a reward for the work he's been doing.

Here's Hoping Lettieri Gets His Chance.

I've always liked the idea of players like Lettieri finding a place in the NHL. Not everybody becomes a star, and not everybody has a long career with one team. Some players have to keep proving themselves, moving between the NHL and AHL, and waiting for the next opening.

That takes a certain kind of determination. Lettieri has put himself back in the conversation, and I'd like to see him get a real chance to show what he can do. He might not be the biggest name on the roster, but he could be the sort of depth player a team is glad to have when it needs him.

Sometimes, those are the players worth cheering for, too.
