There’s something interesting about Morgan Rielly talking about Gavin McKenna before the Toronto Maple Leafs have even opened training camp. It would be easy to focus on Rielly saying he expects the 18-year-old to be “flying around” when camp begins. That’s certainly a nice thing to hear about the first overall pick. But the bigger point might be what Rielly said about the Leafs themselves.

After missing the playoffs last season and making major changes throughout the organization, Toronto doesn't sound like a team planning to ease its way into 2026-27. Rielly talked about players being excited and motivated after the overhaul, and he emphasized that camp needs to be “good and hard and fast” because the season comes quickly. That matters for McKenna, because the Maple Leafs aren't bringing him into a team that can afford to spend months figuring itself out.

McKenna Is Walking Into a Team That Needs a Fresh Start.

That's probably the most interesting part of this story. McKenna isn't simply joining a good team as the next exciting young prospect. He's joining a Maple Leafs team that finished with just 78 points, missed the playoffs and then changed its general manager and head coach. John Chayka has brought in a collection of new players, Jim Hiller is taking over behind the bench, and there is clearly a different tone around the organization.

Rielly's comments suggest the players understand that. He said there is excitement around the changes, and that's important because veterans don't always love organizational upheaval. In this case, Rielly seems to see it as an opportunity to start over. McKenna can become part of that new identity almost immediately. He doesn't have to carry the team, and nobody should expect an 18-year-old to do that. But he can bring some energy and creativity to a group that needs both.

The Maple Leafs Can't Afford a Slow Start this Season.

And that may be the real takeaway from Rielly's comments. The Maple Leafs don't have much time to figure out what they are going to be. Training camp needs to establish the way Hiller wants them to play, the new additions need to find their roles, and the returning players need to buy into it quickly.

McKenna will be one of the most watched players in camp, but he isn't the only one under pressure. Rielly and the rest of the veterans have a pretty good idea of what happened last season. They don't need another October spent wondering what kind of team they have. They need to know quickly. If McKenna really does come into camp “flying around,” that could be more than a nice story about a talented rookie. It could be exactly the kind of spark this new-look Maple Leafs team needs.
