Whatever Happened to ex-Maple Leafs D-Man Martin Marincin?
One of the things I have always found interesting about hockey is that we remember the stars. We remember the goal scorers, the captains, the players who lift trophies. But every team also needs the other guys. The players who move in and out of the lineup. The players who get called up when injuries happen. The players who do the small things that coaches notice, even if fans sometimes overlook them.
Marincin knew his role with the Maple Leafs.
For Maple Leafs fans who followed the team and the Marlies about 10 years ago, Martin Marincin was one of those players. You knew the name, and you knew his role. The big Slovak defenseman was never going to be the guy leading a power play or putting up huge offensive numbers. That was never his game. At 6-foot-5, Marincin was built around size, reach, and defending his own zone.
Edmonton selected him in the second round of the 2010 NHL Draft, hoping his physical tools would develop into a full-time NHL career. He spent time in the AHL with Oklahoma City and saw opportunities with the Oilers, but he never quite established himself as a permanent NHL player.

Toronto claimed Marincin off waivers from Edmonton in 2015.
He became the definition of a depth player. He was the guy who could step into the lineup when needed. Marincin could handle minutes. He could keep the game simple. Coaches trusted him because he understood his job.
During his NHL career, he played 227 games, recorded 34 points, and scored only five goals. Those numbers tell you something important. Offence was never the reason he stayed around. Reliability was.
One of the highlights of his time in Toronto came with the AHL Toronto Marlies. Marincin was part of the 2018 team that won the Calder Cup, one of the best moments in Marlies history. For a player who spent so much time moving between leagues, that championship mattered.
For Marincin, his NHL chances finally dried up.
Eventually, the NHL chances slowed down. After the 2020-21 season, Marincin decided to return to Europe rather than continue chasing another opportunity. It turned out to be a good decision. He joined HC Oceláři Třinec in the Czech Extraliga and found a place where his experience and defensive style fit. He has remained an important player there and has been part of multiple championship teams.
Sometimes careers do not end with a big announcement. Sometimes players simply find the place where their game makes sense. Martin Marincin was never a star. He was never supposed to be.
But he was a professional. He found a way to play in the NHL, win in the AHL, and build a successful career back home in Europe. And sometimes, those are the hockey stories worth remembering.
