The closer we get to the 2026 NHL Draft, the more it feels like the Vancouver Canucks might surprise people with the third overall pick. For months, much of the conversation has centred around Caleb Malhotra. He's a talented centre, and centres often carry extra value at the top of the draft. But as draft week arrives, more and more insiders seem to believe Vancouver could be leaning in a different direction.

Why are the Canucks leaning towards Swedish winger Ivar Stenberg?

According to Daily Faceoff's Steven Ellis, the momentum behind Stenberg appears to be growing. If the Maple Leafs take Gavin McKenna first overall and the Sharks select Chase Reid second, the Canucks will face the first truly fascinating decision of the draft.

There are a few clear reasons Stenberg is gaining traction. First, he might be one of the smartest players available. Ellis suggested Stenberg could have the second-best hockey sense in the entire draft class behind McKenna. That’s a significant endorsement. Elite hockey IQ often translates well to the NHL because smart players find ways to impact games even when they aren't scoring.

Second, Stenberg already has experience producing against professional competition. Playing for Frölunda in the Swedish Hockey League, he scored 11 goals and 33 points in 43 games. That's impressive production for a teenager in one of the best leagues outside North America.

Third, his game appears to fit the modern NHL perfectly. He's strong on the puck, owns an excellent shot, and can contribute in multiple areas of the game. While some prospects are viewed as purely offensive players, Stenberg's supporters point to his all-around game as one of his biggest strengths.

Stenberg’s ceiling might be higher than the other options available.

There's also the possibility that Vancouver simply believes his floor is higher than some of the other options available. Not every top-three pick becomes a superstar, but organizations increasingly value players who can impact winning in several different ways. Stenberg checks many of those boxes.

The Canucks may still select Malhotra. Nothing is certain until draft night. But if the recent buzz is accurate, Vancouver's front office may view Stenberg as the safer and more complete player. And if that's the case, don't be surprised if his name is the one called when the Canucks step to the podium at third overall on Friday night.
