Flames' Kevin Bahl Injury Creates a Problem, and an Opportunity

Losing Kevin Bahl for the rest of the season is a tough break for the Calgary Flames. There's no point pretending otherwise. He had become an important part of the defence, and head coach Ryan Huska wasn't exaggerating when he called him the team's best player so far this season.

But there's another way to look at this situation. Calgary is rebuilding, and sometimes an unexpected injury creates an opportunity that a coaching staff might not otherwise have considered. The Flames can't simply replace everything Bahl brings to the lineup. The question is whether they can use his absence to learn something about the defencemen already in the organization.

Maybe the Answer Is Already in Calgary.

Brayden Pachal has been recalled, and Joel Hanley has already shown he can step into the lineup. Both are useful players, but asking either to take over Bahl's responsibilities for the remainder of the season might be asking too much. That's not a criticism. Every team needs dependable depth defencemen, but there's a difference between filling a spot and replacing a player who has become an important part of the team's defensive structure.

I'd be more interested in what Calgary does with Yan Kuznetsov, Zayne Parekh, and Hunter Brzustewicz. Kuznetsov could get an opportunity to play alongside Simon Nemec. That would give Nemec a chance to take on more responsibility while testing whether Kuznetsov can handle a bigger assignment.

Parekh is another interesting possibility. He's an offensive-minded defenceman, and pairing him with a dependable partner such as Zach Whitecloud could give him more freedom to play his game. Brzustewicz could also benefit from an expanded role rather than spending the season waiting for another opportunity.

None of these combinations is guaranteed to work. That's precisely why they're worth exploring.

Calgary Doesn't Have to Find Another Bahl Overnight.

Here's something worth remembering about rebuilding teams. Sometimes the temptation is to solve every immediate problem, even when the longer-term answer might be more valuable. Calgary could look outside the organization for a temporary replacement, but why spend assets on a rental when Bahl is expected to return next season?

The Flames need to keep competing, but they also need to learn what they have. Bahl's injury is a setback, and nobody in Calgary should be happy about it. Still, if the Flames use this opportunity to give some young defencemen meaningful minutes, they might discover something useful for next season.

They won't find another Kevin Bahl by moving a few names around. But they might find out who is ready to take the next step.
