Jack Campbell Was Everyman in Pads, And Maple Leafs Fans Loved Him

That’s not the lasting image I have of Campbell.
But for Maple Leafs fans, that shouldn’t be the lasting image of Jack Campbell. Because for a while in Toronto, Campbell gave fans something they rarely get from a goaltender. He gave them someone they genuinely liked. Jack Campbell was Everyman in pads.
He wasn’t the superstar goalie with a larger-than-life personality. He wasn’t the player who arrived with a Hall of Fame résumé and a mountain of expectations. He was something different. But the numbers only tell part of the story. What fans remember is the smile. They remember how happy he seemed after wins. They remember how much he cared. They remember a goalie who never acted as if he were above the moment.
