NHL Records: The Mastery of the 150-Point Club

In the high-energy world of NHL hockey, scoring 100 points in one season is a dream. It means you’re a superstar. But there is a much higher, "secret" level that almost no one ever reaches: the “150-Point Club”. While hundreds of players have hit 100, reaching 150 points in one season has only happened 17 times in over a century of NHL history!
To understand how rare this is, you only have to look at the six legends who hold a membership card: Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Phil Esposito, Steve Yzerman, Connor McDavid, and Bernie Nicholls.
The King of the Club: Wayne Gretzky
If the 150-Point Club were a playground, Wayne Gretzky wouldn't just be playing on it—he would own the whole park. While the other five legends combined have reached this goal eight times, "The Great One" did it an unbelievable nine times all by himself.
Between 1980 and 1991, he made scoring 150 points look as easy as riding a bike. He owns the four highest-scoring seasons ever (his famous 200-point years), but even in his "regular point-scoring" years, he was often flying past 160 points. In fact, Gretzky owns more than half of all the 150-point seasons in history!
The Elite Friends
The other eight times a player hit 150 points, it was by these hockey heroes:
Mario Lemieux: Lemieux hit 150-point mark four times (1987-88; 1988-89; 1992-93; 1995-96).
Phil Esposito: Esposito was the first player to ever reach 150 points in one season (1970-71).
Steve Yzerman: Yzerman had a massive season in 1988-89 with 155 points (65 goals).
Bernie Nicholls: Nicholls scored exactly 150 points (70 goals) in 1988-89 while playing for the Los Angeles Kings.
Connor McDavid: McDavid put up 153 points (64 goals) in 2022-23.
The Torchbearer: Connor McDavid
For decades, it seemed like no one would ever join the “150-Point Club” again. But in 2022-23, Connor McDavid changed everything by scoring 153 points. Right now, McDavid is the only active NHL player with a membership card to the “150-Point Club”.
Cool Fact: A few active NHL players who have come close to joining the “150-Point Club”: Nikita Kucherov (144 points) and Nathan MacKinnon (140 points).
So, the question remains: Who will be the next NHL star to join the “150-Point Club”?
